Our House: Bad Schönborn, September 1997 - April 1999

Making a home in a new place can be quite an adventure. It's especially interesting in a new country with a different language and culture.

For instance, in Germany, an apartment or house doesn't necessarily come with a kitchen installed. No appliances or cabinets, just an empty room, like the rest of the house. Sometimes, you can buy the kitchen from the previous owner. We bought a newly built home, so we had to start from scratch and purchase a kitchen -- appliances and cabinetry. Doug did all the plumbing for the sink, and I wired up the stove/oven.

There are also no closets. You have to buy wardrobes, which are called schranks. We have dedicated an entire room on the third floor to our clothes. Even better than a walk-in closet!

We've also brought stuff from our past home and added new things. Doug and I have discovered that we are quite the "Do-It-Yourself" -ers. Take a look at our progress!

Our brand-new, German-style kitchen. You can't see the fridge, but it has the same cabinet face as the rest of the kitchen.

Check it out, I actually sewed the curtains in here. Yep, that's Logan on the bed.

Our libary wouldn't be the same without Capt. Picard

There's Logan again -- lounging in the library, showing off more of my curtains.

We spend a lot of time here, listening to CDs, watching our favorite (taped) shows and the two English channels we get, CNN and NBCEurope. We have even watched our favorite shows in German, like X-Files, Star Trek and The Simpsons.

Thanks to tapes from the US, we are able to keep up with X-Files, Babylon 5 and General Hospital.

Here is where we eat all our meals. We've got some room for guests, too.

We have a really neat stair case. Did we mention that there are 3 floors and a basement?

We each have our own bathroom in the house. Doug's bathroom has a bathtub and Maida's bathroom has a shower. This is Maida's bathroom.

Maida is quite proud of her bathroom. It is her private mini-spa.

Here's the Jeep in front of our house.
